Local History group receives tablets to help members get online

Older resident setting up his new tablet

The Digital Inclusion (DI) team were delighted to visit the Once Upon a Time group in Harpurhey in early July to gift members new tablets as part of Manchester City Council’s anti-poverty initiative, Making Manchester Fairer.

The group of older residents meet weekly during term time at Greater Manchester Academies Trust. Led by Vicky and Amanda from the Family Partnerships team at the school, the sessions bring people together to explore the local history of Collyhurst, Monsall and Harpurhey.

Vicky identified that several group members either did not have internet access at home or lacked a suitable device to get online. The DI team were on hand to help address this need.

Working alongside Manchester Adult Education Service, the DI team set up the new tablets to meet residents' individual needs and provided data SIM cards for those without home broadband. Residents also received practical tips and guidance on using their new devices and were delighted with the support and equipment.

The tablets will support members' interest in local history by providing access to online archives, historic photographs and research resources, helping them uncover and share more about the area's past. The devices will also help the group with their day to day activities at home.

The group is currently looking for new members. The free drop-in session takes place every Monday during term time from 10am to 12pm at Manchester Communication Academy, M40 8NT. They also host a weekly wellbeing session, Feel Good Friday, which includes gentle chair-based exercises, board games and a meal for £2 per session.
