Cheap broadband and phone tariffs
Cheaper broadband and mobile phone packages, known as social tariffs, are available for people who are in receipt of benefits, including Universal Credit and Pension Credit, among others. Some providers call these low-cost tariffs ‘essential’ or ‘basic’ packages, others refer to them as social tariffs.
What are the benefits?
Social tariffs work the same way as normal packages, just at a lower price, usually between £10-20.
Most tariffs offer fast broadband speeds at over 30Mbits/s.
There are usually no, or low cost, set up fees.
If your current provider offers a social tariff, you should not have to pay a fee to switch contract.
You can leave a social tariff any time without having to pay exit fees.
Your price will not change mid-way through your contract.
Do I qualify?
Each provider has their own eligibility criteria, but if you, or someone in your household, is on Universal Credit then you should qualify. Some providers also include people on other benefits, such as Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, and Income Support.
How do I apply?
First check with your current supplier to see if they offer a social tariff you could switch to. If they do not offer a social tariff, then you may be able to switch to a different supplier. Remember, you may have to pay an exit fee with your current supplier if you leave midway through your contract.
You can apply for most tariffs online, or if not, speak to your provider over the phone.
