Citizens Advice helping communities get online

Citizen’s Advice Manchester has recruited two Digital Inclusion and Engagement Officers – Rosa and India – whose role is to go out into the community, to raise awareness on citizens advice and help to create ‘community hubs or centres’. These are places across the city where people can speak to a Citizens Advice specialist on a designated day about digital issues and barriers.

So far Rosa and India have been going out, trying to understand the general picture of digital access and exclusion by mapping community venues and exploring Manchester's communities. They’ve also been attending any and every community event, alongside the Citizen’s Advice Energy team. The community events we have attended include, the Cheetham and Crumpsall Ukrainian festival, local Black History Month events and so much more!

What we’ve heard so far

  • Voices of the people who actually need this digital support are vital. The conversations between organisations can be very different from the actual work done by the community on the ground.

  • People have told us they are not too sure how to get in contact with us and what we are able to support them with.

  • Many people are not aware of the benefits of ‘being digital’ and it's really important that everyone in our community is made aware that becoming confident internet users can help us to feel more empowered about our health and well-being.

What’s planned

We are actively seeking centres that specifically work with disabled and Black, Asian and ethnically diverse communities. If you have any suggestions on centres that you think would be a good venue, want to find out more or work with us, please contact us via video.advice@citizensadvicemanchester.org.uk

In the future, Citizen’s Advice want to provide video hubs (locations where people can speak to us virtually, in the community) across Manchester, to make sure we are in the places where we are most needed. We are always keen to find new ways to promote the benefits of getting online and working with our Manchester residents.

You’re nott alone, lots of people are learning to get online

We are here to help anyone to move forward with their lives, whatever that might be. No one should feel alone which is why it’s important to get in touch with Citizens Advice as and when needed.

For example you might need help accessing your GP surgery online booking system or need self-refer for mental health support, talk to someone 121 or find local support groups.
