Libraries now accepting device donations!
We have partnered with Community Computers to deliver a comprehensive device donation and refurbishment programme!
What devices do they accept?
Community Computers will accept laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras and small desktop computers through the library donation scheme. If you are looking to donate something larger, such as a server or a full-size desktop, you can arrange for Community Computers to pick up directly from your house! The only items that they cannot take are monitors and printers.
How does it work?
Simple! You can take any devices that you no longer need or use down to your local library and speak to staff who will help you through the process of unlinking your device from any cloud servers. Your device will now be on its way directly to the professionals at Community Computers, who will ensure that it is taken through the correct procedure.
What happens to my device?
The team at Community Computers remove all sensitive information by physically destroying Hard Drive Disks (HDDs) and digitally wiping Solid State Drives (SSDs), conforming to both national and international standards. Anything that cannot be used, can be recycled! Broken devices are scrapped for parts and materials that can be reused.
Laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets are refurbished so that they are in perfect working order, and then provided to low-income residents at a fraction of their initial cost.
Anything else is sold elsewhere to help Community Computers cover their operating costs, which helps reduce the price of devices going back to residents.
What are the benefits of donating my device?
By donating your device, you are helping Manchester to fulfil its carbon neutral goals! A device that is reused and given back to the community, has less of a carbon footprint than a newly manufactured device, and it means that no parts are being thrown into landfills.
Additionally, these devices allow low-income residents to get access to devices that can help them become more digitally included, which helps lead Manchester towards a more socially inclusive landscape. Not only do Community Computers provide a device at a low cost, but they are also part of the National Databank, and as such they can grant free sim cards with access to the internet, as well as follow up support.
