Device donations in the past ten months

In the past 10 months, our partnership with Community Computers has provided over 70 refurbished devices to a range of different community organisations in Manchester.

These devices were pre-owned and expertly refurbished by Community Computers Community. Community Computers are a non-profit initiative operated by Renewal North whose aim is to help bridge the digital divide by refurbishing and repurposing devices that has been donated into their organisation. They provide fully licensed devices with support into the community at low-cost to no cost to support disadvantaged families and individuals to get online. Refurbished devices offer an eco-friendly solution that bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and sustainable consumption. During the device timeline with Community Computers, each device undergoes several rigorous checks, inspections, and repairs to ensure that it is fit for redistribution.

A considerable portion of these donations were laptops that went towards the Making Manchester Fairer Kickstarter. The laptops went directly to parents in an effort to foster active digital participation in their children’s educational journey and to build long term digital confidence. Device donations have also been made to various organisations such as Caribbean African Health Network, Crossacres Resource Centre, and Digital Independent Specialist College. Most recently to Potting Herbs with Gale who launched their digital skills sessions at Gorton Library with a supply of laptops (shown in picture) to help towards learners making the most out of their digital journey.

Community Computers take in donated devices from individuals and businesses. All of Manchester Libraries are device collection points for device donations so if you have an old device (no printers or monitors) consider dropping it in to your local library today. Businesses can arrange for device pickups from their premises. Community Computers have a commitment towards data destruction and ensure that all sensitive data will be securely wiped from the devices in line with industry-wide standards. Any devices that cannot be refurbished will be responsibly recycled to prevent the devices from ending up in landfills.
