Our digital inclusion work
About Let’s Get Digital
We believe everyone should have access to the online world.
That’s why Manchester City Council’s Digital Inclusion team, part of Manchester Libraries, is working hard with partners across Manchester to bring digital skills, confidence and access to all.
The campaign is called “Let’s Get Digital” and is a call to action for everyone to get involved!
What is digital inclusion?
Digital inclusion is about ensuring everyone has access to the technology which they need to participate in modern society. It is not about digital; it is about inclusion.
Digital exclusion is when people cannot use technology in a way that’s right for them, whether that’s through lack of data, device, skills or confidence.
Digital exclusion can be both a cause and a consequence of poverty and can exacerbate other social inequalities (disabilities, racial inequalities, lower levels of education etc.)
The Digital Inclusion team want to help everyone in Manchester to have the skills and confidence to get online and use digital in a way that works for them.
“Our mission is to support all Manchester people to access the benefits of being online.”
Our digital inclusion approach
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to digital inclusion.
People may be digitally excluded for all sorts of reasons: lack of device, unaffordable broadband, no motivation, data security concerns, sensory impairments, English as an additional language etc...and so people need varied support, based on their needs.
You are the experts on your communities.
This is why our team works with a range of community partners to embed digital inclusion into existing services.
Progress so far
There are many amazing initiatives being delivered across our communities, by a range of partners, to support the people of Manchester to get online and stay online. But there is still lots for us to do. You can find out more about the activities we have planned in our Digital Inclusion Action Plan.
Our team has been in place since Jan 2020 and we have achieved a lot so far…
