Circle is an innovative, membership-based service open to anyone aged over 50. Circle offers a range of activities including social events, help with transport, opportunities to develop skills, and a digital support service.

One of the big issues highlighted by the pandemic has been what is called the ‘Digital Divide’.

The Digital Divide is the gap between those who are and who aren’t on the internet.

Working with partners, HMR Circle has created the Digital Tech Library, where we can loan people tablet and laptop computers to help them get started on their internet journey.

Our Digital Inclusion Offer

Digital Classes:

We run digital drop-in sessions for the over 50s in the Boroughs of Rochdale and Bury. These are free of charge and take place weekly. Our classes are run by staff and supported by peer volunteers.

One-to-One Tuition:

If required, we can offer one-to-one tuition in people’s homes which is particularly beneficial to those who may have mobility difficulties.

Loaning Equipment:

Our service users can borrow a laptop, Chromebook, or tablet to use at home or at a class. Loaned equipment can be used for education, work or wellbeing purposes. For those from a low income household, Circle can offer people up to 6 months of free data. We can provide SIM cards and Wi-Fi hubs and help set them up so they can use the internet on their devices.

Impact: Case Studies

Ahmad, a 66-year-old gentleman attended one of our digital skills events and has indicated his keenness to enrol in the classes. Over the past two months, he has been regularly attending the weekly sessions at one of Circle’s digital classes in Rochdale, beginning as a complete novice. During this period, he has acquired the skills to operate his laptop, send emails, and make online purchases, including buying clothing and cinema tickets.

His overall quality of life has seen an enhancement, and he has successfully economised by availing offers that match his budget. Furthermore, he has been able to stay in contact with family and friends residing abroad.

Sheila is an 81 year old lady who has recently become a carer for her elderly sister. She needed internet access and a laptop so she could order online grocery shopping to be delivered to her and her sister as she was no longer able to visit the shops due to mobility issues. She also wanted to be able to complete applications online, type letters, and search the internet for information relating to her caring role.

Circle offered a home visit to set up internet access and loaned Sheila a laptop from Circle’s Digital Tech Library. Circle’s Digital Support Coordinator provided tuition on how to use the device and guided her through the process of ordering groceries online. She has also continued to access IT tuition at Circle’s digital class in Rochdale. Sheila has been delighted with the service she has received and has found the equipment invaluable.
