How Manchester’s libraries promote digital inclusion

From giving away free sim cards, to helping people gain digital skills, our Manchester Libraries are doing it all. See in the case studies below how our libraries have engaged with its people and fosters digital participation.


  • Talal (pictured) from Moss Side, found that being provided with a mobile phone has enabled him to correctly organise this day-to-day activities as well as their health and well-being needs. He can use the device to schedule appointments as well use it for his research and leisure needs.

  • Patricia from Monsall, has found that having access to free internet and a free laptop has allowed her to improve a variety of computer and web skills. This has enabled her wider participation in online group sessions. She says;

    The internet can be scary at first just try to keep safe and not give too much information about them i.e. personal details passwords etc, and just to try to relax and have fun but be alert just in case”

  • Udei from Salford, had problems with accessing the internet. After being provided with free internet, he was able to research information related to housing and college. He says:

    “There is support out there”

  • Glynn from Higher Blackley, found that free internet and digital skills classes in the library has equipped them with Microsoft Office skills especially in relation to compiling charts and research forms. With this, they were able to conduct research into their family history

  • A parent from Crumpsall, has found that free internet usage has enable them to teach their child Microsoft applications on a desktop computer. The parent was also able to improve their IT skills and stated that the best thing about being online was connectivity and information.

  • Tom from Middleton, has found that being given free internet usage has made him able to access services such as internet banking and check emails. He says that this has made his life easier as tasks are completed in less time. It also enables him to connect with friends in other cities.

  • Steve from Chorlton-on-Medlock, attended Digital Skills classes and developed skills related web addresses and emails. He says that its helped him widen his interests and states that;

    Everything else is on-line and I don't like being excluded”

  • Doreen (pictured) from Burnage, attended digital skills classes and found that they have given her different ways of doing things digitally. It has also given her more confidence in using all areas of the internet. She says to anyone afraid of using the internet to;

    “Go for it - it will open a whole new world for you.“

  • Martin from New Moston, states that after the loss of his mobile phone, he was unable to get in contact with his family. On receiving another one, he was able to get back in touch with them and also get support from his doctors. He was also able to connect and search for things that interested him online. Martin states to those who may have internet worries that;

    “Once you learn how to access the internet and the things that are available, you don't need to be scared.”
